After I brought my beta home almost a year ago I began to notice that he has what appears to be whitish colored scars on his face. In addition to this he has white on the very top of one of his fins (it acctually looks like a grey hair to me) and he is starting to look like he's turning white underneath. He also may be losing color on his body, but I'm not sure. What is wrong with him, and what can I do to help him?
What is wrong with my Beta?
It could happen if the fish is too cold. It is using it's energy to live, not be colorful...
Bettas thrive on heat, and will become increasingly listless when the water temperature falls below 75 degrees. They come from waters of 80+ degrees. They do best in at least 3 gallons of water. Betta tanks and lily vases are not suitable environments for betta fish.
Optimally the water for keeping healthy Bettas should be soft, warm, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Water movement should be kept to a minimum, which means that power filters and powerheads are not suitable.
In nature Bettas eat insects and insect larvae. Internally their digestive system is geared for meat. For this reason, live foods are the ideal diet for the betta, however they will adapt to eating flake foods and frozen and freeze dried foods.
Brine shrimp, Daphnia, plankton, tubifex, glassworms, and beef heart, are all excellent options that may be found frozen or freeze dried. If flake food is fed, it should be supplemented with frozen and freeze-dried foods, and if possible live foods.
Any of the above, if not followed will shorten the already small 2-3 year life span of the betta fish.

Believe it or not fish need sunlight. If your fish isn't getting enough natural light, then he will start to lose his color. I acutally had the same problem with my Beta, because I had him in a room that didnt get much sunlight. So I moved him to a different room in my house where he can get some light and his colors came back and he has been fine since then :]

i dont think he has enough sunlight, my betta faded from a pretty blue to a gray, but then i put her in a room with natural sun light and she slowly got her coloring back,
please make sure not to give them too much sun light

The betta just needs more light if you just have a fish light put a lamp next to the tank and it will gain to get color back
