Why can't you smell your own poo?

Ok, I know it's not the most tasteful of subjects, but I've often wondered.

You know how it is. You wake up do the yawn, stretch and scratch then head to the bathroom. While you're sitting on the throne any "aroma" is quite slight and not at all offensive. Once finished you wash up, check bags under the eyes, look for grey hairs and check that six pack isn't turning into a Watney's seven, then go to the bedroom to get the toothbrush off the charger. When you walk back into the bathroom - woah! Where did that stink come from?

Why can you now smell it, but couldn't before? Anyone have any ideas?

I always blame the dog. Farts, smells etc. very handy having dogs about.

I'm not convinced by the argument for not noticing the smell as it gradually creeps up on you, if my other half thinks he's got away with a stealthy silent fart I usually notice that! I'm sure it must be an actual reflex of some sort. I know exactly where you're coming from. (and I charge my toothbrush in the bedroom too - no plug sockets in the bathroom in my old cottage)

Depends how long you were sitting there. Your nose adjusts to your own local smells, like perfume, etc. Then it seems like you don't have enough perfume on and you add more and others think you bathed in a perfume factory.

well MAYBE becuz ur nose was immune to the smell of poop when you wer inside the bathroom, but then wen u went out the smell of the sorrounding was now diffrnt so wen u went back you can now smell the poop..thats a maybe though..LoL

You have to remember that you do as most people state get used to the smell when it is given in small doses. However also smells ferment in the air, if you leave the items in the bowl too long before flushing and allow the airbourne bacteria associated with the solids to mature then the smell will get worse. Also when you agitate the air inside the pan when you flush it can only go one way, up and out of the pan, therefore increasing the aroma within the room.

Put the lid down before you flush and see if makes a differance.

you can smell it before and after -but it does not occur as bad as someone elses , i find ,also when another person has poooed in the loo and when you go in it really bloody stinks, worse than when you go .anyway it is just human nature same as other animals .

Here is my theory. The human nose, while not the most advanced in the animal kingdom still came in handy when humans were developing from that animal known as an ape (not a monkey. Monkey's have tails your self-obsessed creationists.)

Well when humans were developing they learned to become sensitive to irregular movements. After all, in early human times if your died, it was probably because you ate something bad.

So, when a prehistoric person was healthy and happy his poo smelled normal. You know, like it's supposed to smell. But if he was sick his poo would change smells and he would know that he was sick.

Now 40,000 years later, we have doctors and MRI machines and a government that tells us when we are sick. We don't really need to smell our own $*%26amp;.

Ever wonder why guys smell their own farts, or sniff their fingers after they scratched their butts? Its the same principle. The first warning sign of being sick is smelly poop.

This is because your sense of smell has become accustomed to the {as you put it ) slight aroma and so the receptive senses advise the Brain of no change.

When you leave the room your senses get used to the other surroundings and is telling the brain of new aromas around you so when you go back you can smell what you left behind.

The same goes for when you really need to go and someone has been before you you say Im not goin in there but desperation is a need so you have to go you cant hold your breath for the whole time your there so after about a minute your senses get accustomed and your Brain Ignores this horible smell and you leave yours behind for the next person
